There is no doubt that many people, at some point in their lives, dream of exploring faraway places in a motorhome. Just thinking about the idea typically conjures up images of a carefree lifestyle, lazy days spent at lakeside campsites, ambling along little known back roads to explore hidden secrets, and sharing stories with other campers around a roaring campfire. Since 2003 Wellington couple Athol and Diane Greentree owner/operators of KTC Motorhome Tours have been making those dreams come true organising and/or leading fully escorted motorhome and campervan tours designed for the more mature traveller in exotic places like Italy, Germany or the UK, or closer to home in Australia and New Zealand, or for the more adventurous - North America, the place where motorhome touring is a way of life.
In 2011 KTC has two fully escorted North America motorhome tours covering eastern and Western USA and Canada. The first tour departs Toronto early May. Only two places are left and an early enquiry is advisable.
As well as visiting most of the well known attractions such as Niagara Falls and Washington DC, the KTC Eastern USA & Canada escorted motorhome tour includes some hidden secrets. One of these is the 105 mile long Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. Built as part of Roosevelt’s 1930’s relief projects, the maximum speed in the park is 35 mph and there are 75 outlooks that offer stunning views. Deer, black bears, wild turkeys and a host of other animals regularly cross Skyline Drive. Shortly after the drive ends we come to Natural Bridge, 20 stories of solid rock carved by nature. The Natural Bridge nature reserve creek trail is one of the state’s most sought after attractions. Close by is a wax museum with excellent lifelike displays of the civil war era. Entry to all these attractions is included in the tour cost. A few hundred miles away is Vanderbilt’s 250 room family home and country retreat with original art from masters such as Renoir, a library with 10,000 volumes, an indoor pool, bowling alley and priceless antiques.
Leaving the hidden secrets behind for a while, we live it up a little with visits to Memphis for Elvis' Graceland mansion and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville before making our way through the Amish region of Indiana where the standard form of transport is the distinctive black buggies. More horse drawn transport can found on Mackinac Island where all transport is by horse taxi or bicycle. Cars are simply not allowed. The most famous structure on the Island is the Grand Hotel built in 1887. It has 385 guest rooms with no two the same. The tour then crosses the 8,614 feet Mackinac suspension bridge as we progress further up the peninsula to view the giant Soo locks complex before crossing back into Canada and travelling around the great lakes. A highlight of this sector will be the three hour wilderness cruise at Parry Sound, one of only 13 UNESCO sites in Canada. The tour concludes at Toronto with a final group dinner with drinks included.
Unlike any other form of travel, group motorhome touring is a unique travel experience providing holiday memories that last a lifetime. Not only do you have the freedom and privacy of travelling in your own rental motorhome, which means you are able to do your own thing on occasions, you can also enjoy the many benefits of group travel. These include cost included day tours and pre-paid entry to all must see attractions on tour plus regular group meals ranging from breakfasts and lunches to full dinner buffets, as well as numerous informal get togethers and happy hours.
