May 2011 - Carolina Izzo Art & History Tour
Appreciation of stunning and historic pieces of art are all in a day’s work for internationally acclaimed conservator, Carolina Izzo, whose dedication to conserving some of the world’s most valuable art and heritage spans 27 years.

Originally trained in art conservation in Florence, Italy, Carolina is now based in New Zealand. From the ‘Studio Carolina Izzo’ in Wellington she provides services to our own museums, art collections and the like. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join her on a small group, boutique tour of Italy, intimately crafted by The Innovative Travel Company, award-winning specialists in Mediterranean travel.
With Carolina you will explore the various aspects of art, history and the harm and culture of Rome, Sicily, Naples and the spectacular island of Capri. What better way to discover the many highlights of palaces, churches, museums and archaeological sites, than on a hosted trip such as this which includes visits to special sites not open to the general public. You’ll meet Italian aristocracy and dine in diverse venues. You will be invited behind the scenes for a look inside the Vatican archives.
Follow in the footsteps of Richard Wagner, Maria Callas and famous artists as you experience first-hand the delights of the recently restored historical hotel ‘Et Des Palmes’ in Palermo, Sicily. Explore Palermo by foot – founded by Phoenicians, refinished by the Arabs, loved by the Normans, transformed by the Spanish, this city has never lost its historical significance.
In Akrigento, the Valley of Temples in the 5th Century BC city of Akragas, clearly demonstrates the importance of one of Greece’s richest cities. Amazing culinary experiences of exquisite traditional cuisine add to the highlights of this tour, including a welcome cocktail party in a Sicilian Palace, hosted by a member of the Sicilian aristocracy for an insider glimpse of their lavish lifestyle.

Colourful Byzantine art, realistic Roman sculptures and historic artefacts are in store for you as you visit the Monreale Monastery. In Caltagirone, see how the long tradition of craftsmen who worked on ceramics created a unique city. The mosaics of the 4th Century Roman Villa Casale at Piazza Armerina beautifully illustrate daily life in Roman times. On a visit to Maurigi Tenuta di Budonetto winery the long history of viticulture and wine making is evident. Discover Noto, famous for its fine 18th Century buildings, some considered masterpieces in the Sicilian baroque style and its churches which have, since 2002, been declared world heritage sites by UNESCO.
On the spectacular Island of Capri and Anacapri there is time to explore plus visit the Axel Munthe Museum and Tiberious Villa with Carolina.
In Naples you visit Herculaneum, the Monastery of St Martino, the Archaeological Museum, and the Opera St Carolo where Carolina was once based.
