You may not know it, but Victoria is full of great walks. Perhaps better known for the vibrant city of Melbourne, if you happen to be thinking of a short break across the Tasman, you might want to integrate some hiking into your Aussie adventure as well. And don’t just make it any adventure – choose the incredible bothfeet Great Ocean Walk.
The Great Ocean Walk traverses the dazzling west coast of Victoria and takes you 104km in a westerly direction from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles. Bothfeet offers an array of walks to choose from including 2 day weekend walks (30km covered), 4 days (60km covered) and the whole trail over 6 supported days (104km). All their walks are guided and they make it possible for groups to go at their own pace and take the time to see astonishing views of the Australian Coast. The sections closest to Apollo Bay are known as the mild side, and include gentler terrain and easier vehicle access for transfers and pick ups. As you trek further west you head along the tremendous “wild side” coast and bothfeet allows plenty of time to stop and visit the many beaches and vantage points the coastline offers.
Each evening, bothfeet transports people back to their exclusive walking lodge centrally located at Johanna Beach. Eco certified and built using the most sustainable materials available, bothfeet owns and operates the lodge just for walkers. Drying rooms, chef prepared meals, ensuite bathrooms and decadent footspas are just some of the features that truly make this hike a holiday. Join one of bothfeet’s packages and let them transport you from Melbourne, or self drive and stay a few nights, joining up with the guided walk of the day.
Walkers carry only a day pack of no more than 5kg, consisting of lunch, water and a goretex type jacket. A bothfeet guide accompanies the group and acts as your Sherpa with a pack containing safety equipment, emergency communications, satellite beacons and 6 litres of extra drinking water.
Some of the natural wonders along the Great Ocean Walk trail include the Great Otway National Park and its stunning cool climate rainforest, calm beaches and incredible marine life. You will have the ability to observe creatures indigenous to this region and to see the wetlands, along with the spectacular Aire River. There are the incredible shipwrecks along Wreck Beach and the Cape Otway lighthouse is always a favourite with walkers.
Walk to the end of the trail you'll discover yourself at one of the region's most astonishing sights: the incredible 12 Apostles. These exceptional rock formations were naturally formed and each one is a free standing entity from the shore. The Apostle rock stacks stand like a mirage against the sea and be it 2 days or 6 days, they are a fitting rewards for your hiking efforts.
