Amazing River Cruises from 50 Plus Travel
Eeny meeny miney mo, on which wonderful cruise should I go?
With so many to choose from it becomes a high-class problem for us all – but let me show you your choices We’re just back from the exciting
Ukrainian River Cruise: a fascinating journey cruising down the
Dnieper River. It was all smooth sailing from
Odessa to Kiev, gliding past picture postcard scenes and enjoying the very best of
Ukraine from the comfort of our “floating hotel” – the river boat
Viking Lomonosov: visit our
Live Journal to see some enticing pictures of our journey to whet your appetite.

We loved
Odessa, the famous "Pearl of the Black Sea" and gateway to seaside resorts, beautiful beaches, shady parks and big tree-lined boulevards. Touring Bachtschisarai, the Crimea-Tartar’s former capital, with its palace, mosques and quintessential Turkish buildings made us think of the fairy-tale “1001 Nights”. The palace here survived Stalin’s time thanks to the Russian poet Pushkin who dedicated a poem to the impressive marble Fountain of Tears.
We also toured the lovely Italianate palace in
Livadia, site of the 1945 Yalta Conference between Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill. The charming Anton Chekhov House brought up memories of his many plays and, of course, we all enjoyed swimming in the Black Sea – and so will you!
But wait, there’s more! We also learned some history at the Cossack Museum in
Khortitsa and especially enjoyed a spectacular show of Cossack horsemanship. The Panorama Museum in
Sevastopol was absolutely amazing - showing (in 3D) the tragic events of the 1854 Battle of Balaclava, during the Crimean War.

Add the famous Monastery of Caves where many of the Russian Orthodox Church saints are buried. We were fortunate to visit the caves on a Sunday and saw many locals, both young and old, practising their religion. The domed St Sophia Cathedral was very impressive. We even managed to see the Strauss
Viennese Waltz ballet in the Opera House, one of the architectural gems of
Kiev.
Another choice for you to consider for 2011 – but for us next month, in August we’ll be sailing the
Waterways of the Czars: from
St Petersburg to Moscow. AND, we’ll spend a week in
Italy enjoying the breathtaking (Tuscany) scenery before boarding our floating hotel
Cinque TerreViking Surkov. We’re sorry, but it’s too late for you to join us, however, we would be delighted to have you on board next year. Contact us for details or just complete the
booking form.
September will see us tour the vibrant
Prague and romantic
Paris, two of Europe’s most glorious cities, and embark on a scenic river cruise through
Germany along the
Moselle, Rhine and Main Rivers. Read about this fantastic journey in our 2009 Newsletter “
