Regular Columnists on GrownUps

Harmen Hielkema has been a regular fixture at the Kerikeri Craft Market opposite the Farmers Market in the KidZone Car Park for the last 3 months. You’ll find him drawing and talking about his portraits there on any fine Sunday.
Portraits of people, pets and favourite things are what Harmen does best.
Harmen practices as a commission artist and illustrator in his Waima Lodge studio, creating high quality portraits of children & adults as well as loved ones who have passed away.
He also renders special commissions for his clients of their pets, boats, vehicles, aircraft, homes, landscapes, etc.
Inspired and informed by his ancestors the Dutch Masters, Harmen’s varied 30 year career in the arts has allowed him to explore the diverse disciplines of graphic design, illustration, mural painting, sign writing and sculpture. His teaching & research experience comes from working at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) from 1998-2005 where he lectured in Art & Design theory, history and practice.
Although he works mainly in pencil, both monochrome and colour on best quality, acid free paper, he also turns to other media such as paint (oils, acrylic and water colour), etching, air brush & pen and ink when it seems appropriate.
Harmen works from references such as passport photos, old fading prints and family snaps (Hard copy of email). He has the ability to capture the essence of an individual to a high degree of realism. His work is proudly displayed by their owners in homes the world over.
With his wife Julie, Harmen runs Waima Lodge Guesthouse in the south Hokianga district of Waima.
Harmen is currently offering 3 hours of free Art Tuition to those interested in further developing their art skills. Art tuition is part of a winter accommodation package which includes 2 nights (three days) at Waima Lodge starting at $190.00 per person per night, including full country style breakfast.
