So - we join the ranks of farmers retired to the town!
Never again will we be classed as 'bumpkins'. Not that we minded - we loved the farming life but a hip-replacement, ageing parent in town and varying factors meant it was 'time'.
After 42 years farming together in the hills, we knew the step would not be an easy one. So to lighten the situation we made a list of 'advice' for others who may have the same experience:
* The flippy-floppy opening thing in the back door is NOT to use so we can hide the key under the indoor mat.
* A 12-year old cat is unlikely to learn that this is for his convenience.
* The BIG plughole is for your food scraps - there is no longer a pig/chook bucket under the sink bench.
* Avoid feeling for lost teaspoons if you can hear action down there.
* Mail appears in the little mailbox thingy, but no-one EVER takes it away!
* The dog barking nearby at 3 a.m. is not yours - go back to sleep.
* The problem of geting used to rubbish days/bags/stickers can not be solved by an offal hole in the back lawn.
* Curtains are for closing - especially at night.
* It is no longer necessary to buy toilet rolls in packs of 12 or more.
* When you hear opossums on the roof at night - be worried, it will NOT be opossums!
* Over-the-fence is not a good place for weeds.
* Washing the car is no longer a pointless exercise.
* The 2000L freezer will not now be a necessity.
* Yes - you really do have to pay for water!
Etc etc etc.
