One of the main roles of a funeral director is to guide the family through the many choices available for a funeral, says John Rhind Funeral Directors manager Tony Garing.
The friendly and professional team of funeral directors is available at any time to explain these options and guide families through the many decisions to be made at what can be a stressful time.
“There are so many decisions to make – where to have the funeral service, who should take the service, what music and readings to have, burial or cremation and where that should be, what flowers to have, and where to have the viewing. It helps to have an experienced professional on hand,” Tony says.
Once the choices are made, Rhinds funeral directors assist with all the necessary arrangements so the family can be sure everything will flow smoothly, he adds. Rhinds can also assist families wanting to pay for the funeral in advance.
As a member of the FDANZ professional body, Rhinds offers the FDANZ Funeral Trust bereavement plan which allows for payment by easy instalments of $20 a fortnight, or lump sum payments, which are exempt from asset testing for long-term residential care.
Tony says that locals are increasingly asking for funeral services to be more personal and individual and less formal, with a lot of thought given to matching the music and readings to the preferences of the person who has died.
As one of the city’s oldest established businesses, John Rhind Funeral Directors has a policy of putting something back into the local community and over the past few years has sponsored a number of local projects and organisations, including the restoration of Christchurch’s historic Bridle Path, the installation of the memorial Firefighters’ Reserve and the restoration of historic Addington Cemetery, where founder John Rhind is buried.
"We're proud to support our local community and help our community grow," says John Rhind, grandson of the founder. "Communities are built on looking after each other, especially at times of need."
