Electricity Prices

This article has been submitted by a GrownUps member. GrownUps accepts no liability for its content and the views and information contained within are not necessarily those of the GrownUps website.

Well, today I received notification that my electricity charges were about to go up again.
What do these supply companies think they are doing; apart from sharfting the older, "Fixed Income", retired and other family units financially. These companies are only intent on making large profits to pay there shareholders a 12% dividend and their CEO's the obscene amounts of $300,000.00 per year. If ever there was "LEGALISED THEFT", it is being used in New Zealand now. Unfortunately the greater majority on NZ'ers are a silent voice when it comes to this type of theft as we are captive customers. The usual plainted cry from these criminals is, we need to address the supply status by increasing our network, or, major lines replacement is needed, or there is a water shortage and we have to buy electricty on the "Spot Market", or we need to build a new POWER STATION and DAM.
Those are terms and phrases that are used by those greedy for largess and no other reason.
They actually pay gratuitous deafness to the poor user because they always get away with it. I have to admit that those terms weren't used when everything was owned BY THE TAXPAYERS.
Incidentally; a relevant Question to you all:........ "DID YOU RECEIVE ANY OF THE INCOME THAT WAS DERIVED BY THE GOVERNMENT WHEN THEY SOLD ALL OUR ASSETS OFF AT FIRE SALE PRICES TO OVERSEAS CONGLOMERATES THAT HAD NO INTEREST IN NZ'ers, BUT ONLY IN PROFITS?"
The Government talked of Regulating the POWER COMPANIES last year.
A lot of good that did, nothing has changed even with the "Minister's Statement".
The power authority's attitudes haven't changed either as they know "WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS", will never happen. I think it is about time that we as NZ'ers rose up against these companies and told them "WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH":
Even the "Comsumer Watchdog" on Electricity Charges who was supposed to speak up for the consumers appears to have had it's teeth extracted by the Power companies.
Power companies have to be told once and for all, "You cant expect to take obscene profits any longer and expect to get away with it," without a fight.

by AJ50 22nd September 2009 Something that I have been thinking about for a while. I personally know of many elderly folk who will not use heating or air conditioning because of the cost, even to the point of trying to reduce their electricity charges by cutting down on things like hot water usage. The government has a responsibility to look after these people as the majority of them have been faithfully paying their taxes their whole lives. The should be subsidies in place for elderly folk to help them pay for electricity. Then there are other things that can be done to reduce their bills like solar heating, double glazing, insulation, and in some rural areas generating their own power. I would love to hear other comments from other readers.
by AMAZONIAN 1st February On recapping my article I have just read the comments of AJ50. Unforunately although the ideas offered make 100% common sense, the "POOR" will still have to front up with cash. Generating your own electricity is a bit of a nightmare: the Electrical Wiring Regulations and the Power Supply Act make it impossible to actually generate your own electricity. One major Regulation states; If you live with 200 metres of a supply lineyou are requioreds by law to connect to it. TO ME THAT'S JUST BUREAUCRATIC BULLSHIT. Get the namby pamby and PC out of our laws and let each and every individual be responsible for their own actions. ( Ooops, sorry that's another story)
