Flat Panel Solar Collector Corrosion

There is an interesting website that has been set up by Gary Moller of Wellington. He writes how their family home had solar water heating using flat collector panels for just over four years, and how during that time, they had to have the solar collector panels replaced three times. When the third set of flat panels had visibly corroded in just seven months and also needed replacement, enough was enough and the panels were removed.

The website www.rustypanels.co.nz has numerous examples of the corrosion problems he experienced with flat panel collectors are detailed from solar water heating installations from around the country. There is a wealth of information on the website about what to do and what to look for when investing in solar water heating for your family or business.

by Mid 25th April 2008 Really true The Solar industry in New Zealand has gone through a very rough patch. With the government's insistence on lower prices, the major players bought in cheaper panels to comply. The Aus / NZ standard passed these. Unfortunately, the standard didn't take into consideration our harsh conditions, although I believe that the cheaper panels were no good anyway. The sad thing, is that the CEO of the largest supplier of dud panels is also the chairman of the board that controls the Solar Industries Federation, the mob that liases between Govt and Industry. However, the Executive Officer of this board, Brian Cox, is extremely concerned that any customer who is dissatisfied with their Solar product get in touch with him, and he will lead you through the motions of having the system repaired or replaced for free. Incidentally, there are some excellent flat plate collectors available, their overseas manufacturers having a history of at least 30 years. Don't reject these entirely, in some situations they are the best solution. Read all of Gary Moeller's site. Also, it is my firm belief that a few of the evacuated tube collectors have inner flaws that will eventually lead to their early demise. Nobody else seems concerned with this aspect yet. Solar water heating is a viable option still, you will gain by going ahead. If considering putting it in, have a look at the product's history. I am happy to give answer any questions for you. I am in the industry, but only partly to make a quid. I think we need to go this way. Regards Mid Beckett
