I want to move my family back to New Zealand but for what?

I love New Zealand. I couldn't care less who has racist intentions just don't bother me with it. I don't care about your political views as long as they have grounding. And I will listen to you as long as you listen too me. Fair enough? Yes...lol...I've been in Australia nearing 8 years have 5 wonderful children along with a lovely wife of 13 years. Seriously thinking about moving back to New Zealand as I would like for my children to at least have some sort of feel of where I come from. Which is Whakaki, Wairoa. And same for my wife Gisborne/Hastings. What I don't want is the trip to be anymore than a holiday. I'd like to think we could move back on a permanent basis.

When I left New Zealand in 2002/3 I was on a wage of $14.70 phr. When I arrived in Australia once finding a job starting rate was $20.00. 6 months later $21.00. 6 months after that $22.00 and after 4 years with the same company...well do the maths.

I say this because the wage on was on in New Zealand of $14.70. I had worked for that company for roughly 3/4 years....are you catching my drift...

My question to you is this. Has the Government done anything about raising the wages in New Zealand to a suitable standard. And if so, what would be the average income. In Australia both my wages and my wifes are declared to 'Center link' where we are still able to get financial help. (Social Welfare) Merely because of the nature of my job of 'Scaffolding" which relies on the weather not raining.

I am a hard worker and most would vouch for me in New Zealand. And same again here in Australia. So my work ethics are just as strong as the next bloke. I'm just thinking after being here so long that coming back home to New Zealand to stay is not going to work out in the favor of my family and myself.

Unless you can tell me otherwise...I think I may have answered my own question. As it doesn't take much to figure out. As I have friends that are making the move to Australia as well for the better opportunity. We just don't want to leave home to do that...hmmm don't know very concerning thou.

Maybe there is a policy among the ranks that would rather put it across in words to the effect of ' if you don't like it then leave' section. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong and tell me there's still hope for the now and not the ever...

by Delboy 9th November 2010 Cant agree more. I live in New Zealand and love the country but cant stand the low wage ideology
by AJ50 9th November 2010 I agree with you erangi100. But wages are related to qualifications and experience and of course New Zealand has been hit harder than Australia with the down turn in the economy. I stay here in NZ because my family is here and my husband has a stable well paid job. We have recently returned from a trip to USA to visit our daughter and her husband in Tennessee. There were more Australians on the trip home on Air NZ from Los Angeles than there were Kiwis. That to me says a lot. Obviously kiwis cannot afford to travel at the moment. NZ does not have the population base to grow economically like Australia does. Also our taxes are extremely high. Another reason why Kiwis go overseas. Not only Australia but USA as well. In some states there is zero income taxes. In the states they complain about 7% goods and services tax. Ours has recently gone up to 15%. I worry whether we will have enough to retire on.
by IdaFlorence 21st November 2010 USA has no health provision included in its taxes or social welfare benefits so that makes their taxes lower, but we are Kiwis who live in Europe...why? solely because of the high wages and the fantastic benefits we get here. We will retire to NZ with our European "Nanny State" pensions which will leave NZ pensions for dead. The Nanny State mentality that NZ'ers have rejected is alive all across Europe - we are well paid; well taxed; well cared for: have excellent education and public services, and our university education is free. Until NZ'ers return to the socialist and caring ideology and ways of Michael Joseph Savage that our grandparents voted in, so that all in the society are cared for, whether it be free education to university level, free health care when required and a government loan to get you started on the housing ladder, then NZ will be down at the bottom of the ladder for its people - where it chooses and continues to vote for. Its up to you NZ'ers.... exemplar: recently had major eye surgery in our family; no waiting list; no private hospital option; top surgeon as surgery was difficult. State picked up account - family person back at work very quickly; no drain on unemployement or insurance claims, where you are feeding a "for profit" industry. What is wrong with any of this? When you get older you realise that these things are more important than flash cars and highly priced over mortgaged houses dont you? You know that free university for your grandchildren is more important than anything else you can give them....you know that family is what is important, whether it is your own family, that of your neighbours or your family country. We are no longer an attractive destination for desirable immigrants either. Europeans know what we are like and others from down trodden and drop kick countries, are the only ones finding us desirable these days. What does that tell us? Comments welcome!!!!
by petrus 19th January 2011 I have lived & worked in NZ all my life ( I am 68). But my loyalty to our country has been stretched to the point where I can no longer laud NZ as the place to live & raise a family. I now advise younger people who are considering their options to get out of the country. For I believe economic conditions are going to get worse, not better. We seem doomed to be a low wage, low skill economy. Not much for our bright young people to aspire to!
by KEEN 3rd April 2011 I find these comments rather sad. We live in New Zealand for the wonderful lifestyle and because we are New Zealanders and don't want to be thought of as Australia or European or whatever. Our health system is great, the education eqand for anyone who bothers to get an education the rewards are plentiful.
