The Humane Society of NZ Inc. was established as a registered charity in 1975.  Started by a small group of volunteers it continues to be run totally by volunteers.  The Society receives no funding at all, relying on membership, donations and bequests to continue its work.  The Society does not own facilities but relies on its volunteers to take the rescued animals into their homes with their own families and animals.

The Humane Society endeavours to improve the situation of needy animals as it is made aware of them.  We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome.

We rescue dogs from Animal Control’s shelters when their 7 day period for claiming has ended and they are due for euthanasia.  We rehabilitate these dogs according to their needs.  They are fully vet-checked, treated for worms/fleas, vaccinated, desexed, registered and microchipped.  They are then carefully rehomed following a detailed procedure and property check with a donation being required to help towards the Society’s ongoing costs.    The Society provides support to the new owners over the rehoming time and is always available for ongoing advice and assistance.

The Humane Society believes that the single most important tool in the effort to deal with unwanted animals is the prevention of indiscriminate breeding.  It is our absolute belief that all pets should be desexed.  In support of this, the Society administers a Spay/Neuter Fund whereby people who wish to desex their pets but are having difficulty with the cost can apply for assistance.  Anyone needing this assistance can call us to request an application form.

Although our volunteers are not professionals, between us we have amassed a great wealth of experience.  We are happy to provide a listening ear, support and suggestions for those struggling with an animal related difficulty.  We do not give advice pertaining to health matters as this is the domain of a qualified veterinarian.

HELP US TO HELP THEM

The Society consists totally of dedicated volunteers.  We need your help.

YOU CAN HELP
by becoming a member of the Society.  You will receive regular newsletters to keep you informed.

YOU CAN HELP
by joining our telephone roster to assist in taking calls from the public.

YOU CAN HELP
by becoming a foster home for our rescued dogs.  If you have some experience with dogs, a safely fenced property and some time to spend, you can assist with the rehabilitation of our rescued dogs.  Costs are met by the Society and full support, assistance and encouragement is given.

The number of dogs we can rescue is directly governed by the number of foster homes in which we can place them.

YOU CAN HELP by making regular donations to the Society for its ongoing work.
The Society receives no funding and relies on donations to continue.
