pruningThe recent set of winter storms will have played havoc with many gardens. Trees have been damaged or felled by the outrageous weather set that has battered New Zealand in recent weeks.

Autumn and early winter often results in really messy outdoor areas, what with extreme weather events, rain and the seasonal dropping of leaves.

If you have significant trees on your property that have been damaged in the recent high winds, consult a professional. Qualified arborists will be able to tend to broken tree limb and create a good shape, without compromising the tree’s structure.  Trimming trees is potentially hazardous and best handled by someone with the correct tools and expertise.

Rose enthusiasts should also dust off their secateurs and ensure their roses are pruned and ready to burst back into life in the spring.

July is a good time to prune roses and trim straggly vines. Pruning at this time of year encourages healthy spring growth and provides an excellent opportunity to have a tidy up outside.

Prune to where there is a shoot starting and if your garden has plants that are is prone to frost damage, use a light fabric to cover and protect them.

Sweep outdoor areas, pull any stray weeds that have come up and make sure everything feels fresh. On grey winter days, it is lovely to look out and see a well-kept garden.
