Using Windows without delving into the Control Panel is like driving a car without ever looking under the bonnet. There's no reason not to and in doing so, not only will you learn ways to fine-tune your computer and make it more responsive, you'll also be in a much better position to deal with problems when they do arise.

What is the Control Panel?
The Control Panel has been a fixture of Windows since Windows 95 appeared on the scene almost a decade ago. It's undergone some changes, especially with the advent of Windows XP, but its core functions remain the same: It provides a central access point for most of the settings and adjustments for Windows and Internet Explorer. From the Control Panel you can change everything from how quickly your mouse moves around the screen to the sounds Windows makes when you start it up.
