Hi I notice here and other publications , people looking for there dog or pet to be cared for while away from home - why not start an exchange of service here? I need a caring person to look after my 13 year old female rough coated fox terrier for about 1 month, I'm in Tauranga so there may be another family in same situation who I can help out when they want to go away. There must be many people who can't travel at will due to no suitable carer for their family pet. I have looked at some boarding kennels and frankly I'm not impressed, my dog is one of our family and I treat it as such. A month in some of the places I looked at be like me spending a month in Mt Eden.

by Vimp 25th September 2012 Does anyone have a special recommendation for cattery in Palmerston North/Manawatu area? I have an 18 month old Burmese cat which is the current love of my life. I go away frequently and he goes to a local cattery but I am not sure that he likes it. If anyone has anywhere they can strongly recommend I would love to know. Thanks. Vimp
by corgimum 15th August 2012 There is a boarding kennel close to Hamilton which takes only small dogs and not many. It is absolutely wonderful, and each dog cared for as an individual, and allocated to a suitable group of 5 or 6 for day exercise and play - a 'boisterous' group, a tinies group, little old ladies etc - whatever suits the mix of dogs currently in residence. I know Hamilton is a bit distant from Tauranga, but I would happily drive that distance to take my two there for periods I am away. I only need to mention "Anna's place with all the fun doggies" and they race down to the garage and sit hopefully beside the car. Called Petite Paws and on Mystery Creek Road. I am more than happy to give it my highest recommendation - I have had corgis for many years (several generations, not the same ones!) and have experienced good and NOT so good kennels. Petite Paws is totally in a class of its own, a doggy paradise!
by Kassakat 8th August 2012 Hi we used to have a similar problem with our cat, we left her in a cattery once and she fretted so much that when we come home she was a mess, so we arranged for a house/cat sitter, that worked well and we have done it twice since, we no longer have a cat so don't have the same problem but still have the house sitters when we go away. Worth a thought kassakat
by Dutchy 2nd August 2012 What a shame that there's not a good facility for your pet in your area. I used to take my miniature poodle to kennels in my area and always felt so guilty and it made me only get away if I couldn't avoid it. There are new kennels here now, run by people who are large dog breeders and treat the boarding dogs (only a few at the time) as their own. The kennels are a real pet-paradise and my doggie is happy to go every time I drop her off. I hope you will find a nice place for your dog for your peace of mind while you're away. Sorry I can't help you, but not all places are bad. All the best. Dutchy.
