This is a short story about my mother, who passed away a year ago. When I was very young, way back in the late 50s - 60s my uncle gave mum a bucket of whitebait to make some fritters. Mum wasn't a sea food person and so didn't know much about whitebait. She was however a very good cook when it come to other food. Well she was actually slicing the heads of each whitebait before she put them into the batter, how embarrassing is that? My uncle walked into see how she was coming along with his long awaited fritters and he was so disgusted at her for wasting his precious whitebait he never ever forgave her. We all made a a big joke about this for years. My uncle however never ever asked her to cook for him ever again.
