'That One Note'

This article has been submitted by a GrownUps member. GrownUps accepts no liability for its content and the views and information contained within are not necessarily those of the GrownUps website.

Can one look back in soft pride
upon fulfillment of one's life,
See the good there in the struggle,
the good there in the strife,
Must we be smug in our victories,
that are apt to ebb and flow,
Or can we not view them,
with a much quieter ego?

Can we now view our fellows,
in a much kinder light,
Are we needing still to beat them,
or did we ever need to fight,
Should we try and uplift them,
and need we to be kind,
Recognising all the beauty,
in the simplest little mind?

Need we hate our own species,
their ways cruel and wild,
Or are we all preredeemed,
in the smiling of the child,
Do we look down upon our neighbours,
on all the harm they do,
Or do we grant them the compassion,
that we are seeking too?

Should we think ourselves the greater,
or lesser than than the most,
When we wait at death's door,
for the 'giving up the ghost',
When we're ready to 'cross over',
to where all souls belong,
Can we be joyous for the one note,
we each played in life's sweet song?
