In this week’s GrownUps newsletter, they gave a big thank you to all the GrownUp members for making the site what it is. Well I would like to say a big thank you and a happy new year to the GrownUp team. Yes, they have provided the tools and the members have provided the stories etc. But if Richard Poole and his team had not started this in the first place, we would not have such a wonderful site today.
Through the chat room I have made a lot of new friends. When I first saw the chat room, I thought this looks like fun. But I didn’t have the nerve to join in because I didn’t know anyone.
Then one night I had a mate staying with me. I said, “take a look at this”. We sat watching what was being said. Then I said “I can click on one of these smileys,” and I showed him. I must have also clicked send. Then it came on the screen. My name with a smiley. Then it came up, “Hey, we’ve got some one new.” That was it. The conversation changed. They started asking me questions. “Where are you from.” And things like that. I was in and accepted as one of them. “we are having a lunch at Speights Ale House a week on Saturday,” one of them said. “How about coming.” “We have a coffee morning at the Elms every Wednesday at 10.30,” another one said. I must have struck it when there were a few Christchurch ones on.
My wife and I went along to the Elms the following Wednesday and walked in all nervous and not knowing what to expect or who we were looking for. We must have looked as though we were looking for someone. A lady said, “Can I help You?” I looked at her and said, “Are you grown up?” “Yes, this is the right group,” she said. We were made most welcome and from that moment on, I have been one of them. We also went to the lunch the following Saturday. I have also been on the chat room just about every night since. My wife and I have been to most coffee mornings ever since. The hardest part is remembering all the names.
Not only have I made new friends in Christchurch, but I have made several all over NZ although I haven’t met them personally.
So once again I would like to say a big thank you to Richard and his team for GrownUps and I hope you have a very happy new year.
