Last year we visited Gallipoli and Anzac Cove in Turkey, and went on to find my father’s grave at El Alamein in Egypt. This was especially poignant, as we never met. My mother was pregnant when he left, and he died 11 months later. He was killed in the second battle at El Alamein in November 1942. We can recommend both of these locations as interesting to New Zealanders. Be aware that travelling in Egypt is not for sissies!!! But really worth the effort. I have included some photos and am happy to give further info.
The first 5 photos are of Chunuk Bair and the 6th of Lone Pine Cemetery. The last 4 photos are of my father’s grave, Neville John Newbold. He was 26. Then photos of the El Alamein cemetery. It was a serene, beautifully cared for, quiet place. A huge contrast to the rest of Egypt.
