AUNT SARAHS ANSWERS

Aunt Sarah had answers like a machine gun. Answers came from her rat-a-tat. There was satisfaction in getting answers, even if the answers were unsatisfactory.
“ Where is God, Auntie Sarah?”.
“Everywhere”.
“In the milk jug?”. Giggling, taking a risk, but a proper question.
“Everywhere is everywhere, but the good Lord has more useful places to go, so get your nose out of that jug and go and feed the chickens”.
“Do chickens care when we take their eggs, are they sad?”.
“They get on with their work and lay more”.
“Ladies don’t lay eggs do they aunt Sarah?”.
Sniff “no”.
“What are cocks for, they don’t lay eggs?”
“Mores the pity. It would teach them some sense. They just eat their heads off and do little else”.
“Don’t you like them aunt Sarah?”.
“Not much”.
“If ladies don’t lay eggs, where do babies come from?”
“You will find out soon enough”.
“When is that?”.
“Off, out from under my feet. Go on with you”.
No hesitations, no groping for the right word. No long, in depth
Explanation for us to lie in bed wondering and worrying about.
What was so wrong with Aunt Sarah’s simple answers?.
Did it damage our young psyche?. I think not.
We knew where we were.
I knew where I was, I was home.
Home with Gran, mother and aunt Sarah. All I had to do was do as I was bid and all would be well.
