Does Your Perfect Kitchen Sound Like a 747 Coming In To Land?
Whether you’re building new or revamping your existing...
The kitchen is a place where a lot of time is spent by everyone, so you want to ensure you feel happy in it. And you want it to be a place of easy conversation and entertainment.
And the trend towards larger open-plans also makes sense. It can really transform living spaces and often looks far more attractive than traditional block kitchens. Plus, it's one of the first things buyers look for when the time comes to sell up.
As one homeowner commented: "With such a hectic lifestyle, I was desperate to come home to a sociable and calming space."
The problem is…
One of the downsides of open-planned kitchens that extend into dining areas is the noise. There’s nothing worse than standing at the cook top and barely hearing what others are saying.
Appliances are usually the biggest culprits.
Rangehoods can be blamed for most of it. But there’s also the traditionally loud food waste disposer, taps and even fans humming in ovens and fridges to a lesser degree.
As one homeowner has said: "On the first night we used the kitchen my hearing was assailed by the loud noises coming from the rangehood and dishwasher. We had music playing in the open plan living but all I could hear was the loud humming of the motor in front of me sounding like a 747 jet coming in to land!"
But which kitchen appliances are best for your needs?
Many of NZ's top kitchen designers recommend products from Parex.
Parex is a proudly NZ-owned company that cares about your kitchen and home environments. They have carefully selected a range of world-leading kitchen and home appliance brands that significantly outperform and overcome the limitations of others to ensure you maintain a sense of calmness and serenity in your home.
One of their powerful yet whisper-quiet rangehoods is the Schweigen Iso Drive. To minimize noise, the motor is located on the exterior of the house instead of in the flue.
Another great invention is their Evolution 200 Food Waste Disposal unit which are 60% quieter than their rivals.
Noise from boiling jugs can also be eliminated with a hot and cold tap that silently provides instantly boiling water. This has the added benefits of having one less appliance around and having boiling hot water instantly available.
Once you've designed your perfect kitchen, don't take half-measures and let your hearing by assailed with noisy and embarrassing appliances. Your family and guests will love the difference it makes everyday for many years to come.

by Patchor 27th October 2010Reading this article has really made me think. I could well have my kitchen work space be a quieter place... somewhere to be creative rather than berated by the noise of machines.
This is a valuable 'read' indeed.
by enmac 27th October 2010 A quieter kitchen would be amazing. I do find the rangehood especilly bad when I am cooking. It is just so nice when you turn it off. As my washing machine and drier are in a cuoboard in the kitchen, you can imagine what it woukd be like with everything going at once!
by travellernz 30th October 2010A quieter kitchen would be really great. It would mean that I could have cupboard doors and drawers that close extra quietly and not with the bang that I sometimes hear just when I think I have shut them ever so quietly. Not to mention the nice quiet rangehood and convection oven.
by Cher17 2nd November 2010A quiet kitchen would be such a great benifit to me as I am visually impaired and noise can be a big hazzard for me.

by BevSmith 15th December 2010I'd just love to win the new kitchen as I have a husband who used to love cooking but isn't doing it too much these days. My feeling is that if he had a lot of 'new toys' he'd be back into it in no time.
by noog 16th December 2010a new kitchen would be great, especially after the earthquakes, the borer, the kids the cats and the wife all do their bit to make it a place where they spend as little time as possible
