Preparing for retirement

GETTING READY FOR RETIREMENT I was approaching the age of sixty and running a very busy electrical business.

My wife was very ill and in full time cares in a rest home hospital. I started thinking what will I do when and if I finally retire.

During college days I really enjoyed doing art. So I thought I would go back to art school and study art. I went to our local college and studied art at night school classes.

Did this for four years, the tutor was brilliant and I learned a lot and had a great time, met a lot of other students with similar ideas. Being a tradesman I found that I also wanted to do some manual work to keep my limbs, hands and fingers supple.

For this I spent some time doing a course on working with stained glass, leadlighting and copperfoil. This has proved to be such a fascinating hobby and combines well with art.

Now retired and over seventy my wife has since passed away, I have such a busy full life style. Designing and making stained glass light fittings and table lamps and doing art works. You meet with so many interesting and talented people. Recently remarried and now have brilliant and interesting fulltime company as well.

My advice to anyone approaching fifty, is to start thinking about what you would like to do when you retire, start preparing yourself now, you will never regret it.

Keeps you young and extremely busy.
