Delights of the Garden

This article has been submitted by a GrownUps member. GrownUps accepts no liability for its content and the views and information contained within are not necessarily those of the GrownUps website.

It seemed such a waste to throw out self seeded plants and perennials when I was breaking them up so I potted them on and put them out at the gate,FOR SALE, with a price tag of $1 and $2. Most days there was pocket money of 20 or more dollars but the best customer was a lad of 7/8 years old. He knocked on the door with $2 in hand asking which plant should he buy for his Mum. It was her birthday and she loved gardening but all the plants looked much the same to him, could I help him choose? I gave him phlomis fruiticosa, (Jerusalem Sage)saying that everyone who comes to my garden asks about this plant then picked out 3 more plants and put them in a decorated box.He was quite taken back exclaiming, "but I only have $2" to which I replied "that's OK I'm giving these to you because you must be a special wee boy thinking of such a great gift for his Mum."

Three months later there was a knock on the door and a beaming lad smiled and said, "my Mum said that was the best birthday present I could have given her and that religious plant is now her favourite too."

by Aggie! 1st July 2007 I know the names of a few flowers but "pray" tell me what is Jerusalem Sage? We also have so many plants, haven't learnt yet how to put them on Trade Me, this sounds a better way.
by dinkydi 28th August 2007 Aggie, I have just found this site and googled the Jerusalem sage to find out too! It is a shrub that grow up to 4 ft tall, has yellow pink flowers, frost tolerant, full sun or part shade. I guess you have to be on a street that has plenty of passing traffic, can't do it in my cul de sac.
by Rainbow 27th September 2007 This proberly not the place to ask but I've been looking every where. I'm trying to find out if anyone knows anything about wood fibre flowers and how they are made.I found an old book with patterns for the petals , I am trying to find out what they are,I have book 2 of How To make WOOD FIBRE FLOWERS published by Wood Fibre Company Kings Chambers Wellington This does not explain how ro prepare the wood any imformation I would be grateful
by tassietony 28th October 2007 I have a publication consisting of 12 pages (each 260mm x 210mm) stapled in 3 places at the top of it. Its blue cover title is: How to Make Wood Fibre Flowers BOOK 1 Published by Wood Fibre Flower Co., Ltd. Hoddesdon - Herts. England PRICE 1/-. It is quite an old typewritten document with instructions and patterns, and I cannot find any trace of the company on the internet. I'm planning to list it on eBay.
by tassietony 28th October 2007 I have just spotted a US a 36 page soft cover Flowercraft Instruction Book titled IT'S SO EASY TO MAKE YOUR OWN WOOD FIBRE FLOWERS. Copyright 1961 by National Flowercraft Society. The seller says the book is in very good condition. It is item number 190167377886 on eBay. The price is US$1.99 + US$7.15 Postage. Check it out.
by carnation 12th April 2008 Hello Ann, there are so many delightful `asides` in the sharing of a garden. and lots of humour. As a wee girl I asked Mum the name of a pretty flower (over 70 yrs ago). Thats a sweet William, she told me. Sweet Billiard Mum? No William. But Billiard it was, and still is, in our family. One of my favourites, they selfseed so readily, and aways a few flowers year round. Cheers Carnation.
by Ann Kidd 29th April 2008 Jerusalem Sage or phlomis fruiticosa as I was told it is called is a perrennial with sage green felted leaves that sends up spires of yellow flowers. My Auntie calles them parrot flowers! Plant forms a clump, a wonderful addition to the garden, when in flower, a talking point. Mine doesn't reach 4 feet, flower heads maybe 2 feet at most, and leaves 8 inches give or take.
by pedr68256 8th December 2011 What can I use as a spray on my beans that does not cost a fortune?
