The yachts came round the bend at night.
Oh what a beautiful sight.
The little craft their lights aglow.
Waiting for the Maxi's to show.
There were throngs of people on every hill.
In their hearts an expectant thrill.
Would it be the sons of the land.
Or a vessel steered by some other hand.
With bated breath and patient heart.
They waited for the gloom to part.
Then out of the night came a magnificent sight.
A spinnaker flying like a ghostly kite.
But by this time it became quite clear.
The winner was Atlantic Privateer
Proud and magestic she sailed into veiw
All hands straining, that valiant crew
Although it wasn't our favorite sons
No-one begrudged them their splendid run
Against the elements they ceaselessly fought
The winning line was what they sought
Hard on her heels came a vision of dreams
NZI Enterprise, her colours astream
Ten thousand small light ringed her harbour of rest
Ten thousand grand cheers for one of the best
Up through the channel and around the North Head
There wasn't a prayer left unwhispered or a tear left unshed
NZI Enterprise and all of her crew
Had shown all the world What a Kiwi can do
Take heart Peter Blake and all of your men
The race isn't over and you've got a yen
To win is all powerful
To try is to win
You've been through trials that others only dream
