Bird watching or birding is a wonderful hobby that involves observing, listening to and learning about birds.
Bird watching can be done anywhere and is a great activity to do with children. Many people find it relaxing and therapeutic to be surrounded with birds.
A good place to start learning about birds is in your backyard. You can attract a variety of species by providing bird feeder.
Here are a few tips to help you choose the right bird feeder for your yard.
• Design-There is an array of styles; from rustic to whimsical to down right fancy! Choose one that enhances your yard. Be sure it is weather proof! Clean according to manufacturers’ instructions to keep your birds healthy.
• Location-Consider placing your feeder out of the wind and where there is enough room for at least a handful of birds. If you have an over abundance of squirrels, place your feeder on Sheppard’s crook away from any trees. There are also a variety of squirrel proof gadgets available; ask your local retailer.
• Bird Feed-Use a bird book to choose which seeds to purchase. Consider birds you are trying to attract and choose accordingly. Black oil sunflower seed or fruit and berry mixes are the most common and will attract a wide assortment of feathered friends. Be sure to clean up any spilled seeds or you may attract other wildlife such as skunks or possum.
Once you have your feeder all set up, sit back and relax. Once you begin feeding your backyard birds, they will return again and again. Happy Birding!
