BRETT Norager has been borrowing his neighbour's mower for his lawns in Ashburton since his return from a stint in Tonga. He was also borrowing Weekend Gardener from his daughter when he entered Victa's March promotion. "I've been borrowing and hiring a mower since I got back," Brett says. "I am avid reader of Weekend Gardener as my daughter was sending up copies to us." In Tonga he was market gardening and running a lawn-mowing round. WELLINGTONIANS can swap a weed for a native plant at a weed swap hosted by the Department of Conservation to mark World Environment Day on June 7, 11am- 3pm in the Civic Square. DOC wants to help reduce weeds in the region while encouraging people to leave their car at home by giving an extra free native plant to anyone with a bike or bus or train ticket. The event is the fourth annual weed swap held in Wellington City.
Thousands of native plants have been given out in exchange for weeds such as veldt grass, turnip weed, wandering willie, Japanese honeysuckle, blackberry, agapanthus, black nightshade, buddleia and Cape ivy. DOC stresses that weeds are one of the biggest threats to native New Zealand ecosystems and that it is vital for people with gardens to understand which plants are invasive. Experts will be on hand to offer advice on identification, eradication and responsible disposal of weeds along with advice on what to plant instead.
