Winter Lawn Tips with Newton Seeds
Put Lawns Aside for the Time Being - Let's Think Spuds

Hello there again – John from Newton Seed. Last month we talked about repairing or replacing the home lawn after the big dry this summer. Anyway, it’s cooling down fast and the autumn lawn sowing season is almost past. I wouldn’t waste any more lawn fert now as turf grasses slow right down through the winter and lose interest in taking on much in the way of nutrient. Save your money. Best to concentrate on a good liming and leave it at that. Give us a ring in August for the bully on scarifying, aeration and good fertilizer for spring.
If you don’t want to park up the gummies through winter then what about getting some spuds in the ground. Yes it is spud season and it’s a great little project over the coming months. Now I’m one of the lawn men at Newton’s; never planted a spud in my life. Eaten a few – that’s about my limit. Jim’s the spud man – he’s the one to talk to about spuds, garlic or yams. He might be old and grumpy but he’s grown the odd spud over the years. He’ll give you all of the advice and help you need to get a good result. If you already know all the answers that’s fine – he’ll just have a yarn while you make your selections from about 20 varieties that we stock. You can buy them singly at Newton’s if you want – no need to buy those 1 or 3kg bags that others make you buy – take one of each if you want –it’s the same price. We’re the cheapest around for spuds but we have the best; certified you know from Southland. Hurry up if you want garlic, as there’s a shortage this year.

Okay – that’s it for this month – give Jim a call about the spuds 09 6364918. If you really want to get the slippers out and do nothing then come in and get your lupins or mustard and take winter off – go to the gold coast and forget about the rest of us.
