When winter feels the nudge of spring
And knows he is no longer king,
He chills the earth with one more frost
Before his tenancy is lost.
But early shoots of spring persist
With strengthening sun the catalyst
That battles with the days of gloom
And sends this winter to his tomb.
We wake to birdsong, warmth and light
When winter’s finally put to flight.
Our trees send forth their welcome leaves,
And the former doubter now believes.
This miracle returns each year
As burgeoning leaves and buds appear.
Disgruntled winter’s grasp is shaken
When in the spring all things awaken.
