Calling all Southlanders (NZ) or ex Southlanders to help me on a mission.
I work in an Art Centre in Southland, and sometimes we look for something different to display rather than art and crafts. Our committee have come up with the idea of 'Toasting the Cheese Roll'. It seems this little delicacy is relevent to Southland only in particular as a fundraiser. This simple icon of the South has contributed in providing funding for many schools and sports clubs, and still is available as a tasty treat in lunch bars.
What can be more delicious than a crunchy piece of toasted bread, filled with a tasty cheesey filling, with butter dripping down your chin, accompanied by a hot cup of soup for lunch on a cold winters day?
We have decided that the cheese roll is an icon of the South just as the Bluff oyster, and it's time it was recognised for all the memories it invokes.
In the first week of September, 2008 the Art Centre intends to display articles on the history of the cheese roll which seems to have evolved from late 1950's. Stories that will bring back memories, and a cheese roll competition offering individuals and businesses to compete. The best cheese roll will be judged by celebrities, e.g Alison Holst, Gary McCormick and many others.
These days the sausage sizzle, and quiz nights seem to be more favourable for fund raising, I guess with the price of bread and cheese these days, plus working mum's without the time to prepare, the cheese roll may become extinct.
I recently found a 'Cheese Roll Appreciation Society' on facebook, and have had some great response from contributors with their stories.
Do you have a story to tell, or a wonderful recipe you would like to share with us. Better still if you live in Southland you may want to enter the competition.
