Scooter cruising

That was me, about six years ago, doing a job I really enjoyed, selling papers in Emerson Street, Napier. Now, I am fully retired, and enjoy reading for TIS, which is Telephone Information Service for the blind. Also, I enjoy going for a cruise on Sam the scooter along the walkway on Marine Parade.

I go out as far as Awatoto, or go along past the harbor, then round the Napier hill. Sometimes, I go visit friends of mine in Taradale. I am constantly amazed at what my scooter is capable of!

When I first had my scooter, I went out to the EIT, (Eastern Institute of Technology) at Taradale, to avail myself of the Community Computing course that was being offered. I enjoyed my trip out to Taradale, and also learned how to use my computer.

My jaunts around Napier are a delight. It makes one realize what a great city, and what a great country we live in.

My favorite trip is along the seafront, on the newly constructed walkway. Eventually, when the link-up is complete, I plan to ride my scooter to Hastings, along the walkway. At the moment, there is no scooter access across the rivers. You can get to the riverbank at Awatoto, but there is no scooter access to Clive, then on to Hastings.

This will happen when the walkway is completed. Meanwhile, Sam,(the scooter), and I stay north of the river. The view across the Bay is full of variety, ships coming and going to, and from the harbor, and the gannets, and other sea-birds are always working. Nature never fails to interest me, as I watch the birds diving for fish. They never miss.

All of this is played out against the back-drop of the Clifton cliffs, as they sweep towards Cape Kidnappers. It truly is a sight to die for. Our part of the world is truly lovely, and I am so proud to be part of it.

Happy scootering!

by Pixie 31st July 2007 DOUG-SCOTTY, love this story, what a joy your scooter must be. Visited Napier for the Art Deco weekend this year and walked along the seaward walkway. We hope to be there again next year. You descibe it so perfectly and I wish you many miles of happiness with Sam. Cheers Pixie
by Cougar 20th May 2010 It is pleasing to hear you are able to get around to so many delightful areas, I to have a scooter and without it i would be lost, I live by Pas Park and travel to and from New Lynn and Henderson and back, to my doctors, chemists as well as family and friends places. But now I hear alot of negativity about individuals being a hazard to bikers on the bike paths, I don't think they realize that we are required to use the sidewalks and paths to travel. They also have to understand that our scooters are much slower then these bikers and they are not as courteous as they would lead us to believe. For some of us this is our only means of getting out of the house, now I am being led to believe that people are pushing for scooter operators to be licensed to operate them? Sorry to put a damper on things. Ed
