The Tangiwai Disaster occurred on 24 December 1953 leaving 151 people dead.
Death has claimed this landscape
For his own
And souls of silent dead
Flutter shadowy arms
At those who come to stand
With cameras at the ready
Posed by monuments
Narrating the solemn nature
Of the tragedy that made up the plot.
Bones long stripped of flesh
Lie buried deep
Their souls forever wander desolate
And full of mourning wail
Searching the way to honest rest
Among the fields and flowers of home.
No birds sing here
Where, like an old grey shawl
The river drapes a cloudy cover
Over rocks that
Crushed and bounced the life
From sleepy prisoners of the night.
Death keeps a sullen quiet
And gently rubs his claws
Into the salted wounds of remembrance.
