Ode to ‘K’ road – coming of age 30.10.2009.

When ladies went dressed up to shop stores by day
At night all the fun girls are stripped down to play

When babies were pushed by their grey haired old nannies
The walk is now strutted by gays and by trannies

When horses were prancing while carriage drivers cursed
Boy racers cruise booming, their ears fit to burst

When monster trams ground along iron cast wheels
Streets teem with Japanese automobiles

Where pavements passed in front of Rendalls and Courts
Neon lit windows pronounce bars and escorts

Where Manchester, shoes, clothing, chemists galore
Now $2 shops dressed in Chinese décor

When accents entwined from bog Irish to Brit
Hear Cantonese jumbled with ancient Sanskrit

Where bars babbled on to the 6 o’clock swill
So civilised, drink maxed out so we can be chill

Smart waitresses served tea, with tiers of cream cakes
Cafes have barista’s, Panini’s and seedcakes

When ladies adorned in fine silk and raw fur
Anything goes although brand names prefer

When men dressed in smart clothes, hat fitting the head
Crutch hanging jeans, shirts out, sneakers, instead

When annual processions were for Santa Claus
The hero’s parade is now dykes, queers and whores

On Sundays the masses dressed for God in their best
Godless nurse hangovers and lattés ingest

Salute her old K road she is as you know
Generational memory imbroglio
