TODAY I TRIED TO CALL A FRIEND
WHO HAD A LOT TO SAY
WE TALKED OF POLITICS AND WAR
OF PEACE AND FAMILY
WE TALKED OF PETS PAST AND PRESENT
AND WE TALKED OF A WHOLE LOT MORE
WE TALKED OF TIMES WHEN GROWING UP
OF WIVES, OF KIDS, AND FRIENDS
WE TALKED OF CARS AND MOTORBIKES
OF FISHING TRIPS AND THEN
WE'D SIT FOR HOURS AND NOT SAY MUCH
BUT QUIETLY CONTEMPLATE
THEN BOTH STAND UP, WALK TO THE DOOR
AND SAY, I'LL CATCH YOU MATE!
NOW HE'S GONE, THE PHONE IS STILL
I KNOW HE'LL RING NO MORE
I KNOW THERE'LL NEVER BE AGAIN
THAT GREETING AT THE DOOR
