Allan Dick - Paul Henry: Did he self destruct? Or was it calculated?

Read more of Allan's blog entries by clicking here.

Paul Henry may have gone from our television screens, but you can hold your breath because he will be back. The question I haven’t heard asked is whether Paul increasingly lost the plot, culminating in the now infamous Governor General remark, or whether his increasingly outrageous behaviour was a coldly calculated plan to earn him headlines, get the sack and find fresh employment doing something more meaningful at TV3 sometime in the future? I suspect the latter.

That famous “Reliable Source” from whence so many journalists draw their information, have told me that as Paul became increasingly naughty, his producer was told to order him to withdraw any remark and make an apology, if it was considered he had gone too far. This was done by whispering into the microphone wedged into one of the chunky Paul Henry ears.

I am told that on the occasion of the Governor General remark, Paul steadfastly ignored all demands to take the comment back and he ploughed on with his chat with John Key.  That would indicate a certain level of determination to see the thing through to the bitter end.

During our time sharing the employment of Radio Pacific, I got to know Paul Henry quite well — about as well as it is possible to get to know this incredibly private and totally self-assured man — and the Paul Henry you get on television, or radio, is pretty much the genuine article — there’s not a lot that is fabricated for the media about him.

Yes, there is one thing. He considers himself to be a car enthusiast and expert. Frankly, he knows diddely squat and is blinded by glitter and trappings, but I never told him that in case he was embarrassed.

I quite liked the times I spent with Paul. He was always warm, but you never really got to know him apart from the fact he was incredibly self assured.

At one stage Radio Pacific teamed me up on the breakfast show with a maniac from Australia called Arch Tambakis — one of the worst broadcasters in history. I couldn’t stand working with the man and resigned. Paul Henry had been hovering around the fringe of real radio and he jumped at the chance to replace me. How he stuck it out with Arch for so long is a measure of his ability to succeed.

The thing about Paul Henry is that he is a much bigger talent than co-presenter on a hokie television breakfast show where you’ve got to chat more about flower shows and babies than do the hard news stuff. Despite the headlines and the ever increasing audience, Paul Henry is capable of far bigger things — of being the best and most important current affairs, hard news, investigative broadcaster in New Zealand. Instead he got landed with mainly froth and bubble, sitting alongside a pretty blonde who was told to only be decorative and dizzy.

Paul Henry was bored with that sort of nonsense and he hankered for being more outrageous and meaningful.

It’s almost been forgotten now, but eight years ago Paul Henry — a man of some personal wealth — funded his own operation and headed off into danger spots of the world as a roving, independent, investigative journalist who sold his reports to major outlets like the BBC, CNN — and Radio Pacific. This was a pretty gutsy move as he landed in tight and dangerous situations on more than one occasion.

I’m betting that Paul Henry really wanted Mark Sainsbury’s job on Close Up — but so too does Mike Hosking and both make a better job of that show when asked to fill in.

I’m also betting that Paul Henry will be given fresh opportunities to show his real worth and he’ll be negotiating right now for a major role, or roles — not with TVNZ who handled him badly, and totally misread not only Paul’s abilities, but actively encouraged his silliness, but with TV3. And Radio Live, which continues to struggle for ratings, is part of the same group. Is it a case of watch-out Marcus Lush and John Campbell?

Now, if you want to read more about the REAL Paul Henry, look for the next issue of NZ TODAY. It’s due in the bookshops on Monday, November the first.

by topaz 20th October 2010 iam glad paul henry is gone, i hope we never see him again, he reminds me of spoilt little brat who loves lots of attention and does anything to get it, now i watch breakfast
by Derekjs 27th October 2010 I can understand the comments above and agree that Paul was wasted on breakfast, however it has now become just another boring time filler at least with Paul it was kept edgy as you never knew what Paul would come out with. It is so much easier now to ignore the programme and get on with the day. While Paul was part of breakfast I used to watch it right to the end in case I missed something, now it is easy to walk away and get on with other things so I guess I owe TVNZ a vote of thanks for giving me back time in the morning. Regard derekjs
by Kiwigull 30th October 2010 I've never watched the smultz they call 'Breakfast' mainly because I work & leave early, and because I can't stand Paul Henry on TV. However, I think he is great on radio, and would love to have him on a regular slot, as long as it was a serious news role, dealing with todays big issues, not just as a talkback host, listening to people who love the sound of their own voices droning on about nothing. He does have good presentation skills, but alas sometimes his mouth operates before his brain
by DAWK01 2nd November 2010 I think Paul Henry calculated his exit from Breakfast because of his co-host's departure early next year. He and Pippa are great friends on and off air and he mentioned more than once that it would be impossible for him to work with anyone else on breakfast. My family and I miss his quick wit and sense of humour - he made us laugh and always great to start the day with a good laugh! However that is not to say that we condone his comments that saw him leave, but he made a full and proper apology.
by 3rdAgeHomeopathy 2nd November 2010 I agree with you and I would would love to meet the man. I respect his honesty and I look forward to seeing him in a better position than the fluffy Breakfast show. Mary
by Oaman 2nd November 2010 I was a "Breakfast" fan as Paul always held your interest with his sometimes outrageous comments which often brought on a smile or even a good old out loud laugh but now "Breakfast" is so BORING I am no longer a viewer.
by dealer 2nd November 2010 PAUL HENRYthe most talented broadcaster we have ,mind you there not much competition ,love the guy or hate him if you are honest you must admire talent ,personally i dont watch breakfast tv1 since he departed .its like womans hour ,not really a family program ,poor Peter Williams he must wonder who will front the program next ,perhaps they try John Banks
by pegsue 2nd November 2010 I also miss Paul on Breakfast and do not watch it as much anymore. I do not condone what he said but get over it people, I see him as a very caring man and dont really think he likes to hurt people but sometimes he gets carried away. Good luck to him for the future wherever that leads him. Peg
by Masie 2nd November 2010 I agree with everyone and everything that has been said except Topaz. It is not necessary to vent your feelings in such a way about a man you do not know. I now watch UKTV for my early morning laughs. 'My Family' and 'French Fields' make a good start to the day. I also thought that most of the time Paul was bored with the trivia he was expected to produce and took the Micky. Love you Paul and look forward to seeing you in my living room again soon. (I wish !)
by noeline mcintosh 2nd November 2010 breakfast is not the same without paul. not that iam saying it is worse. i think it was time he moved on as he became silly and too self opinionated. good for a laugh though. he should re surface in a few months in a different role on tv. can't think in what capacity, but maybe foreign affairs or an opposition show to breakfast. if he manages to stop skiteing so much he will be great.
by ansy pansy 2nd November 2010 Love him or hate him, there's no denying Paul brought Breakfast to life. I would just love to see him on Closeup which I would then watch. If Mike is hosting it, we watch it, when Mark Sainsbury is on, we switch channels. His "I mean" ... repeated I mean"... and repeated again "I Mean" at least three times each time he opens his mouth has earned him the "I mean" title in our house. Paul would increase the ratings of that programme tenfold. He is interesting, vibrant, stupid, over the top, and we love him
by Gonny Lawrence 4th November 2010 never really watched the program
by onea 4th November 2010 I did enjoy watching Breakfast, and in particular Paul Henry. I know he seemed over the top at times, but I think he did that to make the show more interesting. I cannot see what all the fuss was about. He apologised to the Governor General, and I believe that apology was accepted. So for me that was the end of the story. As for the Indian Minister's name, the way Paul pronounced it was exactly correct, as the lady in question confirmed the correct way to say her name. Since Paul's departure Breakfast has become SO boring. Pippa seems to be more "fluffy" and her co-presenters have not got Paul's pizzazz. I agree with Allan - I think Paul has other things on his mind and I for one cannot wait to see what happens next and to tune in to him, wherever he may be. I have no doubt that Paul is a very kind and generous person, and good for him that he is so selfassured. We need more people like that in our world.
by Dr Livingstone 9th November 2010 Anyone who thinks that calling Susan Boyle a Retard and abusing The Governor General for not being in his eyes a real Kiwi needs treatment or a very long rest. Also People with physical & intellectual disabilities deserve better from our Public broadcaster. And they the same respect we have all come to enjoy Funny he certainly was not.! Paul Henry stepped over the line and has paid the ultimate price. Good Riddance.
by sali001 10th November 2010 Oh Dear..... TOPAZ and DR. LIVINGSTONE..does it not bother you that you are out on a limb here.......maybe an opportunity for a little "reflection" perhaps! Great that we are all entitled to our own opinions and have the freedom to voice them... I miss Paul dreadfully and am still trying to find another way to "kick start" my day. So hope that you are right Allan and that he will emerge a brighter star..such talent deserves recognition.
by Gisbo 13th November 2010 I agree with you Dr livingstone. Any time I saw Paul Henry's mug on T.V. I would switch to another channel - he is a smug, self-opinionated prat and I don't find his comments amusing at all. T.V.3 is welcome to him, but then I don't watch their news etc., either
by Snooky 15th November 2010 Absolutely love Paul Henry and think TVNZ totally overreacted to the situation. HE WILL BE BACK ON OUR SCREENS, and I agree he is much too talented to be on a show like breakfast. He is up to much better and bigger things.
by buzzybee242 19th November 2010 Bring back paul, i dont enjoy breakfast the same now without our Paul, come on Paul behave and get back on our screens.cheers.
