Can you read/spell ?

This article has been submitted by a GrownUps member. GrownUps accepts no liability for its content and the views and information contained within are not necessarily those of the GrownUps website.

How spelling has changed. When we were youngsters lists of words had to be learnt for homework, and if we failed to spell any correctly in the next day's test, it was an offence punishable by strapping (considered child abuse today).
Now texting has changed spelling to abbreviations and less.

The following message I recently received, proves that we learnt all that spelling for nothing anyway.
"Cna yuo raed tihs?

I cdounlt blveiee taht I cluod aulacity uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? Yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!"

The ntoe said taht olyn 55 plepoe out of 100 can raed it. Are you one?
(((With apologies to the Grownup team who ask that we should attempt to make sure our articles have no spelling mistakes)))

by beecee 11th November 2008 A sign of the times. Unfortunatly.
by HGee 12th November 2008 It is a sign of the times. Both my Mum and Grandma were very particular about grammar and spelling (both were school teachers), and would carefully check our homework. Any mistakes and we had to do extra spelling homework. However I don't regret it and have always loved to see things written correctly and also love reading. In saying that, I love my cell phone and definitely use txt talk, especially when having conversations with my teenage granddaughters. What makes my mind boggle is the speed their fingers move across the buttons. Mind you, they have a chuckle at my much slower efforts.
