'An unknown quantity'

'The beach is quiet, the sand is cool and a light mist moistens the air,
An hour to dawn and in the sand I sit, not knowing why I'm here,

Wavelets whisper upon the shore with a soothing lullaby sound,
Gentling my heart and caressing my mind, where happy thoughts abound,

A tremour of anticipation runs up and down my spine,
Then a feeling of tranquility, to be savoured like mellow wine,

I sit here in the darkness and my heart it gallops free,
There is something a little frightening, the unknown quantity that is me,

The dawn it fast approaches, a lightening of the eastern sky,
The stars they fade out one by one, and finally they die,

The fresh new sun struggles out of the sea to warm the waking land,
Wakes the birds, caresses me and warms the golden sand,

As I look upon this dawning, I ponder hard and long,
One moment the answer is almost there, then suddenly its gone,

And there is great frustration as I sit here in the sand,
Because I feel a great significance, but don't quite understand,

Perhaps the clue is in the simple dawn that I have looked upon,
The clue to the reason for my life,just a note in destiny's song,

And on the crest of my confusion, one idea is borne,
That first I must know the great sunset, before I can know the dawn.'
