She is here one moment, and gone the next
Wandering off in her mind
And she's visiting in some twilight zone
Leaving us all behind.
She is telling a tale, then the words are gone
And frustration will furrow her brow;
She wanted to tell me, I wanted to hear
So we both are the losers now.
Some days I'm her daughter, her sister, her Mum
Some days I am no one she knows
Some days I'm the enemy watching,
Watching wherever she goes.
I remember so well the by-gone days
When we all would crowd to her place
To share all the festive occasions
And to see the joy on her face.
But that's gone and she comes to us now
And she doesn't remember our home
Our husbands, our friends, or our children
And we cannot leave her alone.
But sometimes we just sit together
A nonsensical sharing time
And we laugh with hearty enjoyment
And pretend she is still in her prime.
And these are the times she is happy
As we try to follow her drift
For laughter is the best medicine
And a merry heart is the best gift.
