Elliptic(al) (of leaves)
More or less oval in shape though tending to a point at each end – one of the most common leaf shapes, the term used more loosely in botany than its strict geometrical meaning.

Epiphyte
A plant that grows on, and usually in the branches of, another, but does not steal nourishment from its host; many orchids are examples.

Erect
Standing up almost vertically, applied to stems, branches, leaves or inflorescences.

Escape
A plant that is on the way to becoming naturalized, having ‘escaped’ from cultivation.

Espalier
The technique of training a tree or shrub, most typically a fruit tree such as a peach or fig, to grow flat against a wall or trellis. It is originally designed to encourage earlier ripening by holding the fruit close to the reflected warmth of the wall, but can also be used for decorative effect.

Essential Oil
An aromatic oil found in minute cavities in the leaves or flowers of plants, or exuded as droplets mixed with resin. Plants are harvested and distilled to obtain commercial quantities of certain oils, used for perfumery and food flavouring. So-called because each type of oil was said to be the ‘essence’ of a particular fragrance – as in lavender oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil – but most such plants contain mixtures of oils of differing chemical composition.

Evergreen
Any plant that retains foliage all year. Evergreen trees and shrubs do drop old leaves, though not until after the new ones have been formed and usually only a few at a time.

Exotic
A plant that is not native to the country of region in which it is grown, though the term is often used to signify any kind of plant seen as strange, alluring or glamorous.
