digital photosMobile, smartphone and digital cameras have revolutionised photography – no more film processing, far less red eye and fuzzy prints. We snap away will nilly, day and night, but other than sharing on social media, do your photographs ever leave your device?

Electronic devices can be fallible. They can be lost, stolen, ‘rinsed’ or dropped, and then the images on them may be lost forever.

Next time you have a rainy afternoon spare, go though your digital photographs and take some action.

Firstly, for your digital safety, make sure you back up your device regularly, either to your computer, or to a cloud storage site. That way, if your device is lost or damaged, you will be able to retrieve your images and data.

To keep your device running efficiently, regularly discard unnecessary photos (do you really need the 27 shots of your cat/grandchild/spouse sleeping, or would a couple of good ones suffice? Make sure they are deleted from storage as well, if you have to pay for it!

There are a number of websites where you can upload your photos for printing (once you have selected the good ones), or there are retailers who print photos really cost effectively.

If you are highly motivated, you may also like to make up a photo book yourself online, which ends up looking like a professionally bound book. These make wonderful gifts after an overseas holiday or family event.

Having printed copies of photographs makes them far easier to share with friends and family, far easier to see (not everyone can make out our little darling in the back town of a concert on a smartphone screen!) and stops a digital log jam on your device.

It also makes one feel terribly efficient and just a wee bit smug – so find your motivation and hop to it!
