Seeking Seniors for some Christmas Cheer

Home Instead Senior Care, a national in-home care provider for older people, has called for the public to nominate senior citizens to receive some free Christmas home decorating and company in its annual Christmas Cheer programme.

Five offices in the Home Instead Senior Care network (Hamilton, Tauranga, Lower Hutt, Wellington and Christchurch) are to run the Christmas Cheer programme, some in conjunction with their local Age Concern branch. Up to 50 local senior citizens from each locality will be selected for the programme.

Pre-vetted volunteer carers from the two organisations will visit the successful nominees in the run-up to Christmas. Volunteers will put up some Christmas decorations in their home, and provide companionship during the visit.

One in three older New Zealanders live alone.

Home Instead Senior Care general manager, Neil Farnworth, said, “We are inviting the public to nominate senior citizens who may be on their own and in need of companionship. We want to bring the spirit of Christmas to older people who may be without family, or deserving in other ways.”

Nominations close on Wednesday, December 2. Successful nominees will be contacted and a visit arranged during the week starting on Monday, December 7.
