The Rugby World Cup 2011 is a hot topic for most New Zealanders. Today recognises the significant planning and input over the last two years by many people wanting to make this a great experience for those coming to New Zealand for this event.
The Disability Resource Centre Auckland Inc. (DRC) is Auckland's largest disability information and advisory centre. On Friday 6th May DRC was congratulated on its valuable contribution towards making Auckland accessible at the launch of Auckland Council’s Accessibility Programme for Rugby World Cup 2011. Tony Howe is DRC’s longest serving staff member; he has lived experience of disability and was Coach of the WheelBlacks for 12 years. Tony received one of only 24 RWC 2011 signed Match Balls for being instrumental in developing and carrying out assessments on-site at key venues, stadia and fan-zones. Tony now goes in the draw to win a ticket to the Rugby World Cup Final. Go Tony!
This is just one part of DRC’s involvement in RWC 2011 as we partner with Be. Accessible – an accessibility and social change programme, inspiring and enabling a 100% accessible society throughout New Zealand.
This year is a milestone year for DRC as we celebrate 30 years as a not-for-profit community focussed organisation making daily living easier - not only for those with lived experience of disability, but Baby Boomers, families and people in supporting roles.
In January this year we launched a number of new projects which include our new Mobile Information Advisory and Equipment Service, taking resources into the heart of communities Auckland-wide. Watch out for our 2 DRC vans (named Lily and Jackie) out ‘n about around Auckland. With the revamp of our website you’ll soon be able to track where the vans are; book the Mobile Service or Conference facilities online; order or hire equipment hassle-free.
The DRC operates from its hub in Royal Oak where we have Auckland’s largest showroom of assistive equipment, information advisory consultants who have extensive knowledge and experience of disability. This includes 2 Chinese information consultants who speak fluent Mandarin and Cantonese.
DRC offers members of the public unbiased, professional advice enabling you to make the best choice in terms of services available or equipment.
As access is important to all of us, DRC has qualified advisors who can carry out Be. Accessible assessments, or Barrier Free audits of buildings and premises.
If you’re looking for an accessible conference facility for your group, consider the DRC in Royal Oak as your next venue. You’ll have access to the latest technology (including a hearing loop); accessible kitchen facilities and bathrooms.
