As our parents become older, many become head strong about continuing to live in the family home. It’s a symbol of their independence, and they would rather live with risk than lose that independence.
We, the sons and daughters, can be accused of fussing and interfering if our phone calls to our parents are seen as too frequent, and yet without that little check, it can be hard to know if mum or dad is OK.
For many, a medical alarm is the solution that ensures safety, and creates peace of mind for concerned family.
Because a Bupa Medical alarm provides a choice of assistance, users are often more likely to press their “Bupa button” for assistance.
Rather than automatically sending an ambulance, our monitoring staff will listen and discuss the situation, then offer an appropriate range of options, from phoning a friend or neighbour to pop over, to sending an ambulance if that’s the most appropriate help.
We will arrange the help that will best support them in each particular situation.
With Bupa you can choose the help you need – your family, friend, neighbour – or police, fire service or ambulance.
We often find that people who have a fall, for instance, prefer to have family or a friend call around to assist them, rather than have an ambulance called. Our experienced Bupa staff stay in touch on the phone until help arrives, so no one is left feeling alone.
If treatment at hospital is the best option, we also let loved ones know. Bupa will also pay any emergency ambulance fees.
At Bupa, our priority is always safety. Once we have determined the best help and arranged it, we will then stay on the phone, until that help arrives and we know mum or dad is safe.
If the “Bupa button” is pressed, and we can’t hear anything, we automatically send an ambulance.
“I appreciated the fact that you stayed on the line until the ambulance arrived.”- Mrs. Ryan
“When I had my fall, I was relieved that you got hold of my friend, and then still stayed on the line until the ambulance arrived.”
If the concern is about personal safety, we will call the fire brigade or ambulance, as required.
There is a range of Bupa medical alarm funding options available, which for some people can include government funding. With Bupa, there are no hidden costs.
“Because of my previous military service, Veterans Affairs pays for my medical alarm. I feel like I’m the one being looked after now. I feel much safer at home with it.” - John
