'Laughter is the best medicine', a saying we've all heard and subscribe to, don't we?
Dr. Madan Kataria, a GP in India, discovered that patients had far less ailments if they regularly laughed. To promote health and given what he had noticed in his own practice in 1995 he formed the first Laughter club. They started out telling jokes and indeed experienced the health benefits. Soon however they ran out of jokes to tell.
Even if one fakes laughter, the body still produces endorphins to support our well being - in other words, it doesn't know the difference!
And as developed a gentle fun filled fitness programme combining laughter, gentle breathing and stretching to enhance physical and mental well being. Experience in his own and colleagues practices learned that through research.
The benefits are numerous. People have reported to have less of aches and pains such as colds, headaches, etc.; gained confidence and a better general mood.
By maintaining eye contact with group members while acting out ordinary life situations, laughter is invoked, subtly excercising muscles and breathing.
There are now some 5,000 Laughter Clubs around the world and several in places around New Zealand. Members all regularly 'practice' Laughter Yoga for health, world peace and just plain fun or more info and contact details please visit www.laughteryoga.org.nz.
