Art For A Cure - Where Music Inspires Art

An Art Project for a Cure, Not a Good Cause

What happens when a selection of New Zealand’s finest artists create works inspired by some of our finest musicians? Art for a Cure.

Art for a Cure is a New Zealand first – a completely unique project that sees artists create a work inspired by a song, or particular lyric, by a New Zealand musician. These works will then be auctioned off with proceeds going to help find a cure for breast cancer within the next nine years, through Breast Cancer Research Trust and its groundbreaking research.

Never before have artists and musicians collaborated together in a group of this size with a goal of this sort. It is truly a New Zealand-first.

Everyone is invited to visit Hopetoun Alpha during the 10 day exhibition to view the artworks. There will be pieces by such esteemed artists as Karl Maughan, Dick Frizzell, Martin Poppelwell, Peter Madden, Virginia King and Stanley Palmer to name just a selection, who took inspiration from some of New Zealand’s best musicians, composers and songwriters including: Don McGlashan, Neil Finn, Nathan Haines, Lawrence Arabia, Whirimako Black and Eve de Castro-Robinson.

In addition to the artworks for sale, there will also be a selection of limited edition sculptures by respected New Zealand artists, umbrellas by Andre Hemer, calendars featuring each of the art works in the project and the Great New Zealand Songbook, all providing proceeds back to the Trust.

Tony Moffatt, CEO of the Breast Cancer Research Trust comments, “We are delighted with the generosity of our country’s leading artists and musicians – each of whom is donating their creative efforts on our behalf. A special mention must be given to each gallery that represents the featured artists – we simply couldn’t have pulled this New Zealand-first initiative together without their support of the Trust.”

The project is curated by Paul Baragwanath and the auction will be conducted by Art + Object. The exhibition is open to the public from Thursday, 22 October to Sunday, 1 November - entry to the exhibition is free. The Auction is taking place on Friday, 30 October with proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Trust.
