Taking Care of Dentures

Caring for your denture on a daily basis can heighten your sense of well being, and compliment your appearance.  In addition, clean dentures help keep the tissues in your mouth healthy and free from unfavourable changes.  Your dentures have been fabricated using high quality materials and it is extremely important that you provide them proper care to get the best service from them.

Regular cleaning using a "soft denture brush" and warm water is the most effective and safe method to clean your denture.  If done on a daily basis this alone will probably keep your denture clean and free from damage.  If there are persistent accumulations, stains that are difficult to remove, or signs of plaque send your denture for professional cleaning and polishing.  After the professional cleaning you can purchase denture ultrasonic cleaner to maintain the cleanliness of your denture.

Taking care of partial dentures

1.  Clean the denture daily using a "soft denture brush" and warm water.  The use of non-abrasive denture cream is suggested.  Regular toothpastes are not recommended for daily use.  They may abrade and contribute to the loss of luster of the denture teeth and base.

2.  Clean your natural teeth thoroughly with a toothbrush, toothpaste, special toothpicks, or inter-dental brushes to remove plaque.  Do not forget to gently brush the parts of the gums that are covered by the denture.

3.  You should not wear your partial denture overnight.

Taking care of complete dentures

1.  Rinse your denture and your mouth without the denture with water after every meal.

2.  Clean the denture daily using a "soft denture brush" and warm water.  The use of non-abrasive denture cream is suggested.  Regular toothpastes are not recommended for daily use.  They may abrade and contribute to the loss of luster of the denture teeth and base.

3.  Carefully brush the inter-dental spaces and the inner surfaces of the denture which come in contact with the mucous membrane, for about two minutes.  In addition, clean the tongue and palate with a soft brush.

4.  After brushing thoroughly rinse the denture under running water.

5.  You should not wear your denture over night.  This enables the tissue supporting the denture to recover.

6.  You should keep your denture in water when you are not wearing it.  Complete dentures may be immersed in a commercial denture cleaning solution.

7.  Rinse the denture under running water before wearing it.

by smileyface1 29th June 2010 I have had dentures for a long time now and still haven't found an adhesive that works!! Polident is advertised as working for 12 hours. I find it loses its grip in about 4 hours. Has anyone found one that really works for longer?
by framps 21st December 2010 This was very useful information for me as I will receive my first dentures early in 2011. Now I know how to clean and look after them, thank you. Frank
by Nifty Fiftyz 15th January 2011 Hi smiley face, I totally agree with you & find that polident does not last, so I"ve started using Steradent ultra 3 which I find last"s longer than polident,I hope this works out for you as well.
by calamity jane 31st July 2011 ive had full dentures now for 8mths,have been trying all sorts.my best is polident that lasts 8hrs for me.Then i tried the cheaper chamomile steradent with the better applicator but it only lasts 4hrs approx an teeth must be dry to apply!!.So im sticking with my polident. If im going out at night i always re apply bout 5pm.No later as i find i cant get my teeth out to soak b4 getting in bed!!ha.The joys of false teeth.lol.
by Rotormother 14th August 2011 I live in Blenheim and want some new dentures - the past 2 sets I've had are not satisfactory in looks- I want to have dentures that make me look like i did before i had my teeth out. I went to Chris Parkes last time but was not really happy with the dentures - can anyone reccommend someone in or near Blenheim?
