Vibrating Alternative to Osteoporosis & Debilitating Falls

Vibration is a new and innovative concept in the future treatment of people who suffer from Osteoporosis. Fractures now affect more than 50% of postmenopausal women and about 30% of men over the age of 60 causing considerable debility and reduced quality and length of life.

How serious is this issue?

Osteoporosis is a disease that is characterised by a progressive loss of bone tissue. It is also one of New Zealand’s most common complications for elderly. The reduction in bone mineral density weakens bone quality and increases the risk of a serious fracture, particularly in the spine, wrist, hip, pelvis and upper arm. Osteoporosis and associated fractures are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, with approximately one third of people who fracture a hip passing away within a year from related complications. Another third never return home, and many of those who do, lose their mobility and independence. More than 3,000 New Zealanders break a hip each year. As our population ages this figure is expected to rise to 4,800 within in ten years time.  (Osteoporosis NZ)

What preventative measures can be taken?

Vibration (we call this very small level of vibration Body Therapy) 32 hertz with very small amplitude of .3 g which has been shown to be beneficial and reverses osteoporosis. Low impact, and offers many of the benefits of conventional exercise only faster.  Walking is not considered an effective measure against osteoporosis due to the low level of impact to the body.

Less than 20 minutes a day of Body Therapy on a low level whole Body Therapy device can effectively induce bone density increase and bone strength. (Rubin 2004).

With vibration the muscle fibres are stretched with each vibration, causing a myotatic reflex or natural stretch reflex. This rhythmical pattern of stretching and contracting in the muscle tissue leads to both neurogenic and musculoskeletal adaptations.

"Women are 80% more likely to suffer from osteoporosis and each year more women are hospitalised with a hip fracture due to osteoporosis than through breast cancer".
A six month study into the effects of whole body Vibration training on hip density, muscle strength, and postural control in postmenopausal women, found a significant increase in bone mass density in the hip. (Verchueren 2004).

NASA have installed this low vibration in the Space Craft for bone density.

How we can help you:

The Excel body therapy device has been developed by our team of specialists over the past years following decades of research demonstrating the benefits of very fine whole of body vibration. The Excel has a specific frequency range to achieve optimum results.

How you use the Excel device:

Just stand on the Excel for 20 minutes per day to start your treatment. As an alternative the device also comes complete with detachable legs to allow sitting while receiving your treatment.

by PamelaA 13th September 2008 I go to the Vibra-gym in Whangaparaoa. I'd suggest you have a 10 or 15 minute free trial to see if you like the sensation. Another great reason to go rather than have your own machine is you mix with people, have support and assistance. Your improvements are documented. It is a fun, enthusiastic environment and they check you are holding the right posture so that you do not hurt yourself.
