Varicose veins & spider veins usually develop slowly over years and often become something “I’ll fix one day…” then not! If left untreated the condition may worsen, and become more symptomatic.
Varicose veins are thought to be inherited. However lifestyle, past and present, can influence how much they bother you. Standing or sitting jobs, heavy lifting, pregnancies and becoming less active as you get older, all tend to make problem veins worse. Keeping active and wearing support stockings will minimize problems, and obviously it is easier to treat any problem earlier rather than later.
Size does not matter when it comes to the symptoms leg veins cause. Small spider veins can be quite painful, while some large, bulging varicose veins may be no trouble. Symptoms may include heaviness & cramps, followed by itchiness, dryness of skin, changes in skin colour and sometimes ulceration.
The reason the lower leg has the problem is simply because the weight of the extra blood in large, bulging veins exerts too much pressure on the surrounding tissues, and this causes skin changes over time.
The distribution of veins is different in everyone – some having only a few large varicose veins, whilst in others the problem may manifest as multiple, dark spider veins, especially in the feet. Occasionally one these small veins may rupture and bleed. This is frightening, but with pressure and elevation of the leg the bleeding will stop. Medical advice & treatment should be sort.
These days, surgical and non-surgical treatments are available. Vein & Laser can treat any vein from the tiniest facial vein to the biggest varicose vein and age doesn’t matter.
Non-surgical treatments involve laser and / or injections. Both methods are safe and effective, and with good follow-up over the following 12 months, excellent results are achieved.
Surgery does require a recovery period (1-2weeks), and because a pre-surgical ultrasound scan is done to accurately “map” the problem vein, a very good outcome is obtained.
Health insurers usually cover assessment, ultrasound and treatment costs, but it is wise to check with your insurer first to avoid being disappointed.
Facial veins and facial redness and sunspots are also problems that worsen with age and sun exposure. These problems are very easily, quickly and affordably treated with LASER - maybe with only one treatment.
