Has this happened to you? You lie down and try to go to sleep, but instead are kept awake by an irresistible urge to walk or move your legs. Called Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), this is a common, annoying occurrence for which there is no known cause. Often occurring in middle aged and older adults, RLS treatment options are limited to cutting down on nicotine, caffeine and stress, taking a bath, getting a massage and doing gentle stretches. Until now.
Last year, Scala, a range of Brazilian shapewear, leggings and tights was introduced to New Zealand. These products were well received because they were different from others on the market – users would notice a find a reduction in the appearance of their unsightly cellulite if they wore the products for 6 hours a day for 30 days. Recently however, some users like Sheree McKenzie, Owner/Specialist Fitter for UnderStatement Lingerie in Rotorua and Gisborne, noticed another beneficial side effect: relief from the symptoms of RLS.
“We road test all garments before we sell them in our store,” she says. “I suffer from restless legs at night and my legs used to ache after standing on them all day at work – but now I wear Scala all year round [because] I found my restless leg problem has improved greatly.”
Sheree’s claims have been confirmed by a medical study conducted in Washington DC in 2009, who found that even just an hour a day of wearing compression garments increases blood flow and encourages vein and lymphatic drainage, decreasing the symptoms of RLS.
Surely then any shapewear garment would have the same effect? Not so, as Scala garments have been specially developed to get rid of cellulite they are made to stimulate cell metabolism by improving blood flow to the skin. Every Scala garment contains a special microfibre with active bio crystals, which when in contact with the skin, absorb body heat and exude infra-red rays that stimulate blood flow and drainage of fat through the lymph system. Best of all, handwashing does not affect or damage the bio crystals in anyway, which remain active for the life of the garment.
Wearing them as instructed, both Sheree and her staff also found the anti-cellulite properties of Scala very effective. “I just love them to bits,” says Specialist Fitter Kay Hopkins. “I followed the wearing instructions for a month, my cellulite was improved and my measurements were less,” she says. “When I take them off at night it feels like some good has been done – they don’t feel hot to wear, are very comfortable, and give a nice smooth line and profile for clothes that are a tighter fit,” she says. “But what I like most are that you know when you are wearing them that they are working.”
