Acid reflux

This article has been submitted by a GrownUps member. GrownUps accepts no liability for its content and the views and information contained within are not necessarily those of the GrownUps website.

For many years I have suffered from acid reflux, as a lot of people do. It is also known as heartburn. Of recent times the pain generated by this condition, which is a burning feeling in the chest cavity, has increased to such a level that I felt it was about time that I obtained professional help. I had been using medication that I had obtained from the local supermarket, but after reading on the internet about the problem, I discovered that I had been treating the symptom and not the cause. The internet also advised me that sometimes the body creates more acid than the stomach can cope with. There are many reasons that acid finds its way up to the chest area. This can be from over eating or eating the wrong foods. If continually left untreated it can lead to serious problems and can even develop into a cancer. A visit to my doctor was money well spent. On telling him of my situation, he prescribed a tablet to be taken twice a day for a period of three months. The first day of taking the medication was like a miracle. From that very moment, I have not had another case of reflux and am finding that I sleep better at night. Before taking these new tablets, I was up at least once a night, suffering and having to wait about thirty minutes for the pain to subside. My message to all those who suffer from the condition is to go to your doctor, get the tablets and enjoy the rest of your life. It’s worth it.

by Lesjim 25th July 2011 Hello Mrhobo. I read your bit on Acid reflux with interest. My husband had that for many years and a camera was put down his oesophus, it found cancer, That was in Oct 2004 and at the end of Nov after many test he went into Chch Hospital for an operation. They cut out 3/4 of his oesophus and 1/2 his stomack and stitched what was left of his oesophus to his stomack. He got blood poisoning from a bedsore that he did not know was there as he was numb from his shoulders to knees. He went into hospital at 78kg and came out at 63kg. He lived his life to the full getting back into golf and his veggie garden. In Sep 2008 he has a big stroke and died in 3 hours but we had been for a xray in the morning of the day he died and it should that he had lung cancer and would not have seen Christmas. He gave up smoking 1 month before he was told about the cancer in 2004 and never went back to smoking. If you smoke try and give it up and keep taking the pills. take care.
