‘U3A’, derived from the words ‘University of the Third Age’, had its beginnings in France in the mid-seventies and has now spread to many countries. There are many thousands of members throughout the world.
It is a University in the original sense of the word – a group of people learning for its own sake or following a particular activity.
U3A is a response to the idea that human life is divided into three periods: Firstly, childhood and schooling: Secondly, child-rearing and work: Thirdly, retirement or semi-retirement.
The Third Age provides an important opportunity for listening, learning, and understanding when middle-aged or older people can pursue the idea of a university as a community of those seeking a greater understanding of life. typical home study groups
Membership entitles members to attend any Study Group that has a vacancy and to participate in a range of other activities, however it does not guarantee that there will be a vacancy in any particular Group.
All members are encouraged to attend the monthly General Meetings and expected to join and participate in at least one Study Group each year.
You do not need a university degree or any other qualification in order to join; life experience and an enquiring mind are all that is needed.
