Bringing back the Mt Roskill Grammar school Kapa Haka group has proved a positive move in more ways than one.
Not only are the students increasing their physical activity but they are discovering the impact healthy eating can have on their performance. All while learning about the cultural significance of Kapa Haka!
To get them motivated, teacher Alexandra Kingi entered them into the ASB Polyfest in March 2009, with just a couple of weeks to prepare.
Ali is a firm believer that healthy eating plays a huge part in the kids’ ability to perform at their best.
“It’s great to see so many of the students getting active and wanting to join the Kapa Haka group. I really believe that ensuring they eat the right type of food to fuel their bodies will have a positive impact on their performance and their health.
“In the run up to the ASB Polyfest we practised every day after school. At this time of day energy levels drop but instead of supplying unhealthy snacks there was water, fruit and Milo available.
“During weekend live-ins, where the students had extra time to practice, only healthy food was on the menu.
“While the students were not keen on the healthy food at first and craved their usual treats, they soon learnt to like it and wolfed it down!”
